ASLS was created by the University of Miami Gordon Center and is now an AHA card-issuing discipline. It is offered only as blended learning. The adaptive online portion covers 14 stroke scales and runs about 3-6 hours on the Prehospital track, 4-8 hours In-Hospital and 5-9 hours on the combined track. Then you complete a three-part in-person skills test with an ASLS Instructor: a normal neurological exam, stroke syndrome identification and a simulation scenario, about one hour per student. The ASLS Provider eCard shows your track and is valid for two years. The AHA awards CAPCE continuing education for the Prehospital and combined tracks.
Paramedics and EMS crews, nurses, stroke coordinators, APRNs, physicians, PAs, residents and respiratory therapists who manage acute stroke.
FAQ
Prehospital for EMS, In-Hospital for hospital staff, and the combined Prehospital and In-Hospital track if you work in both settings or plan to become an ASLS Instructor.
Yes, awarded by the AHA, not by Code Blue. Prehospital track: 4.25 hours online plus 1.00 hands-on. Combined track: 6.75 online plus 1.25 hands-on. The In-Hospital track carries physician, nursing and respiratory therapy CE instead. CE for ASLS can be claimed once every two years.
